MALUMREX

It didn't stop. It got louder, if a written word can be loud.

MALUMREX.

I have looked for the etymology and found nothing consistent — fragments that could be Latin, fragments that could be a name someone invented to sound old. It does not matter anymore whether it is a word with a history or a word with none. It has a presence either way.

I no longer believe I am investigating an anomaly that a handful of unlucky families happen to carry. I believe there is something else in this, something that predates the eight names, something that may have been arranging for them to be found long before I was the one doing the finding.

MALUMREX may predate the very record I used to find my own name in.
